From HR Graduate to the People Paracetamol

Melissa chose human resources while still at school because she wanted to work in business and knew every organisation would always involve people.

Her career included roles across government, energy, mining surveying and architecture. Three redundancies eventually pushed her towards business ownership.

After discovering an opportunity to use licensed HR tools, she launched her own business and later developed the memorable People Paracetamol brand.

Focus on How, Not Only What

During one leadership role, Melissa managed a team where two employees became involved in a shouting match. Rather than deciding who was correct, she focused on how they had chosen to handle the disagreement.

The issue could be discussed. The behaviour was unacceptable.

Melissa believes workplaces should include debate, questions and different views. The standard must be how those conversations are conducted.

Culture Must Be Visible

A value such as integrity is too vague unless employees understand what it looks like in practice. It may mean arriving on time, being honest, raising issues appropriately or following through on commitments.

Leaders need to explain the behaviours they expect. Culture is created through what is modelled, rewarded and tolerated.

Communicate for the Other Person

Melissa once presented ideas to a manager in the fast, enthusiastic style that worked for her. Her manager preferred detail, structure and a slower pace.

She later realised that effective communication means presenting information in a way the other person can receive. This lesson now shapes how she helps leaders influence better outcomes.

The Green Mazda Theory

When someone decides to buy a particular car, they suddenly begin seeing that model everywhere. The cars were always there; the brain has simply decided they are now important.

Melissa applies the same idea to referrals. People cannot look for the right opportunity unless you clearly explain what you need. Do not assume your network knows who you want to meet or how they can help.

Melissa’s Advice for Business Owners

Be clear about who you serve and what you are trying to achieve before following every new platform, tool or trend.

Your decisions should support your customers, including the employees inside your business. If a change does not serve them, question whether it is the right move.
