James Rose’s path into real estate was anything but direct.
Before becoming a real estate leader in Greater Springfield, James worked across construction, hospitality, retail and banking. Each chapter developed the resilience, financial knowledge and problem-solving skills he now brings to property.
In this episode of Your Number 1 Business Podcast, James joins Antoine Vidal to discuss mentorship, calculated risk, building a team and why success should be measured by the value you create for other people.
James began as a school-based plumbing apprentice before working in construction, cleaning, hospitality and retail. After external study, he entered banking and spent almost a decade developing broad experience across lending, insurance and customer service.
A banking client, experienced agent Benjamin Smith, encouraged James to consider real estate. On his first day observing Ben, James attended a $10 million property inspection involving Clive Palmer.
The experience showed him what was possible. He accepted a major pay cut, began what Ben described as an apprenticeship and spent years learning real estate through discipline, preparation and hands-on experience.

How James defines success through community impact
Benjamin Smith taught James that prior experience did not remove the need to learn the profession properly. James spent years developing habits around presentation, preparation, follow-up and integrity.
Today, James applies the same thinking to younger agents. He believes the right mentor can change a career, while the wrong advice can send someone in the wrong direction.
James’s banking background made him comfortable with systems, documentation and regulation. Ben strengthened that discipline by teaching him to prepare for problems before they occurred.
Real estate can change hour by hour, so James also had to learn flexibility. The strongest agents combine planning with the ability to respond calmly when a campaign changes.
James believes a real estate agent should create value even when the client does not sell with them. That may mean advising someone to remain in their home, renovate first or avoid a poor financial decision.
People remember useful advice and the way they were treated. A strong reputation is built through service, not only completed transactions.
As the business grew, James hired younger team members and began mentoring them using many of the lessons he received.
He expects hard work, discipline and a detailed understanding of the process. The goal is not only to create salespeople, but future agents and business owners who carry strong standards into the industry.
Find a good accountant. New business owners need more than someone who completes tax returns. They need strategic advice, financial discipline and someone willing to challenge decisions.
James also encourages business owners to seek mentors who have real experience, strong integrity and a genuine interest in helping them grow.
James Rose is a real estate professional and team leader with Brisbane Real Estate. Drawing on experience across construction, banking and management, he has built a strong presence in Greater Springfield through local knowledge, strategic advice, mentorship and community involvement.
